Patrick A. Hurton
Webmaster/Public Information Officeer - Navy
I enlisted in the Navy in June 1962 and went to boot camp in Sam Diego, California. Upon graduation from boot camp I was assigned to Electronics Technician School at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. While awaiting a billet at the school I was assigned to a YTB (Yard Tug Big) out of Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. After 4 months on the tug I decided to change my path and chose to go to sea rather than "A" school. I was then assigned to the USS Caliente AO-53 (a fleet oiler) home ported in Long Beach, California. The Caliente was commissioned in Oct. 1943 and served our country through WWII, the Korean War and the Viet Nam War. She was decommissioned in 1973 after earning 14 battle stars and eight campaign ribbons. I was assigned to the Supply Department working in the Supply Office where I was responsible for calculating the fuel transferred to each ship that came alongside I was also responsible for ordering all the supplies necessary for the ship and keeping track of the ship's Operating Budget. I was on the Caliente from January 1964 until October 1966 and was an SK2 (Storekeeper 2nd class) when discharged. I married to my wife Charleen in May of 1965 and we have 2 grown children.
