I enlisted in the Air Force on 13 March 1958 in Los Angeles.  I served with the 305th Bomb Wing Bunker Hill AFB, Indiana as a Crew Chief on B-47 and B-58 Hustlers, the world's first Mach 2 Bomber.

In 1964 I was accepted for Officer's Candidate School but chose to report to the 4200th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, CA and became the first Crew Chief assigned to the SR-71 program.  I received further SR-71 training at Lockheed in Palmdale and Burbank, CA in preparation for the first delivery in Jan. 1966.

From Dec. 1969 to Dec. 1970 I served as Line Chief on RF-4Cs with the 16th and 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons at Tan Son Nhut AB, Republic of South Vietnam then returned to the SR-71 Program in January 1971.
 
In Jan.1976, I reported to Detachment 1, 9th SRW, Kadena AB, Japan as the SR-71 Superintendent , responsible for all assigned aircraft maintenance and flight activity.
 
I returned to Beale AFB in Aug 1978 as the SR-71 Superintendent and was promoted to CMSgt (E-9) in Jan 1980.  From Jan. 1980 until my retirement in Mar. 1987 I served as Maintenance Superintendent and as Command Chief responsible for all SR-71, U-2/TR-1, KC135Q and T-38 aircraft assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing.
 
I retired from the Air Force in March 1987
 
Don has been married to his wife Jo since 1962 and they have two sons and one grandson.
